Private of public blockchain?

Bij het horen van de term blockchain wordt vaak standaard uitgegaan van een publieke blockchain. De cryptocurrencies die momenteel veel in het nieuws zijn, maken allemaal gebruik van een publieke blockchain. Dit lijkt dan ook de voor de hand liggende keuze bij de invoering van een blockchain. Echter naast een publieke blockchain is er ook de mogelijkheid om een private blockchain toe te passen. Kortom: zet je een private of public blockchain in ? Onderstaand worden de verschillen en overeenkomsten beschreven.

Overeenkomsten

Voordat we naar de verschillen gaan kijken, eerst een aantal overeenkomsten:

Maar wat zijn nu eigenlijk de verschillende tussen een private en een publieke blockchain. De grootste verschillen zitten in de mogelijkheid wie mag deelnemen in het netwerk, wie het consensus protocol mag uitvoeren en wie het grootboek mag bijhouden. Een publiek netwerk is volledig open en iedereen kan lid worden van het netwerk. Sommige netwerken hebben een incentive mechanisme om deelnemers aan te moedigen om deel te nemen aan het netwerk. Bitcoin is een van de grootste publieke netwerken vandaag de dag.

Een nadeel van een publiek netwerk is dat een substantiële hoeveelheid computerpower benodigd is om het gedistribueerde grootboek op grote schaal bij te kunnen houden (hiervoor worden inmiddels diverse oplossingen bedacht om deze belasting te verminderen). Soms is ook de openheid van de publieke oplossing onwenselijk, waardoor er niet op elk niveau privacy van transacties is. Beide zaken zijn belangrijke overwegingen voor bedrijven bij de toepassing.

Implementatie mogelijkheden

Bij het gebruik van een private blockchain binnen een organisatie zijn er verschillende implementatie mogelijkheden. Tevens verschilt de werkwijze m.b.t. de toelating van nodes binnen een private t.o.v. een publiek netwerk. Ook het consensus model werkt op een andere wijze. Voordat een private oplossing binnen een organisatie kan worden ingevoerd, is het dan ook belangrijk om deze keuzes helder te hebben en de te bepalen route te definiëren. In een volgende blog zal ik verder op de keuzes en hieraan gerelateerde overwegingen ingaan.
