Met grote regelmaat valt het ‘B’-woord. Blockchain, de technologie onder bitcoin en de technologie onder heel veel goede (en minder goede) innovatieve ideeën.  Er is in de media al jaren een interessant patroon te ontdekken. Veelbelovend technologienieuws wordt vrijwel direct gevolgd door relativerende beschouwingen. Iets wat we bij de adoptie van nieuwe technologie overigens altijd zien. Mooie, soms te mooie, berichten, gebracht door voorstanders bekritiseerd door tegenstanders. En, eerlijk is eerlijk, ook voor blockchaintechnologie geldt dat bij aanvang slechts een handvol oplossingen van meerwaarde zijn.

Blockchaintechnologie

Toch is dit niet vreemd. Dit hoort bij nieuwe technologie. En met name bij de adoptie van nieuwe technologie. Toen ik begin jaren negentig internet ‘ontdekte’, zag ik hetzelfde. Om een berichtje te versturen moest ik de huistelefoon ontkoppelen, de modem aanzetten, met veel geduld een verbinding tot stand brengen en hopen dat iemand anders dat ook deed. En, dat was nog maar het eenvoudige deel. De gewone man op de straat moest er niets van hebben. Dat veranderde pas toen er een ‘killerapp’ kwam voor iedereen: email. Email leverde voor velen het eerste bewijs dat internet ‘nuttig’ was.  Maar het heeft nog jaren geduurd voordat we ons realiseerden wat we er allemaal nog meer mee konden.

Waar staan we dan nu met blockchain?

Blockchain is een nieuwe technologie die een zelfde ontwikkeling doormaakt. Snelle opkomst onder nerds, langzamer adoptie door het grote publiek. Tien jaar geleden werd blockchain bedacht om er een beter financieel systeem mee te bouwen. Nu gebruiken we blockchain voor veel meer dan alleen het transporteren van internetgeld. In vergelijking met de ontwikkeling van het internet zijn we met blockchain ongeveer halverwege de jaren ‘90. De vergelijking tussen internet en blockchain laat een identiek beeld zien met een verrassend overeenkomstige adoptiecurve. Toeval? Ik geloof het niet.

Met het huidige internet zijn we in staat om informatie over internet te verplaatsen. Met blockchain zijn we in staat om waarde over datzelfde internet te verplaatsen. Op een transparante, verifieerbare, decentrale en veilige manier. Een grote belofte!

Waarom zouden we dat niet gaan gebruiken?

Er zijn vele toepassingen te bedenken. Maar net zoals bij het internet begin jaren negentig: je gelooft het pas als je het ziet. En, de ontwikkelingen nu gaan veel sneller dan toen. Dus aan alle blockchain enthousiastelingen: laat concreet zien wat je met blockchaintechnologie kunt veranderen.

Aan alle anderen: oriënteren en experimenteren kan geen kwaad. Voor je het weet mist je business de kracht van innovatie en heeft deze veelbelovende technologie je aan alle kanten ingehaald!

Beautiful, sometimes too beautiful messages from proponents criticized by opponents. And let’s be honest, even for blockchain technology, only a handful of solutions are of added value in the beginning.

Yet this is not strange. This is part of new technology. And especially with the adoption of new technology. When I ‘discovered’ the internet in the early 1990s, I saw the same thing. To send a message I had to unplug the home phone, turn on the modem, patiently connect and I hope someone else did too. And that was just the easy part. The common man on the street would have none of it. That only changed when there was a killer app for everyone: email. For many, email was the first proof that the Internet was “useful.” But it took years before we realized what else we could do with it.

Where are we now with blockchain? Blockchain is a new technology that is undergoing a similar development. Rapid rise among nerds, slower acceptance by the general public. Ten years ago, blockchain was invented to build a better financial system. Now we use blockchain for much more than just transporting internet money. Compared to the development of the internet, we are with blockchain about the mid-nineties. The comparison between the internet and blockchain shows an identical picture with a surprisingly similar adoption curve. Opportunity? I do not believe it.

Today’s internet allows us to move information across the internet. Blockchain allows us to move value across the same internet. In a transparent, verifiable, decentralized and secure manner. A big promise! Why not start using that? There are many uses to consider. But just like with the internet in the early 1990s: you won’t believe it until you see it. And things are moving much faster now than they were then. So to all blockchain enthusiasts: show concretely what you can change with blockchain technology. To everyone else: orienting and experimenting can’t hurt. Before you know it, your company lacks the innovative power and this promising technology has overtaken you on all sides!
